Carbon Monoxide Safety

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is produced by the burning of any fuel.  Therefore, any fuel burning appliance in your home is a potential source of Carbon Monoxide.  When appliances are kept in good working condition, they produce very little CO.  Improperly operating appliances can produce potentially fatal CO concentrations in your home or business.  Likewise, using charcoal indoors or running a car in the garage can also cause Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning can kill you.  The initial symptoms of CO exposure are similar to the Flu (but without the fever).  They include; Dizziness, Nausea, Fatigue, Difficulty Breathing, and Headache.

Remember - If you have any of these symptoms and if you feel better when you go outside into fresh air, and then reappear when you re-enter the home or business, you may have CO Poisoning.

How you can protect yourself:

Carbon Monoxide Detectors are widely available in hardware stores and online.  They come in various types such as battery operated, wall-plug and a combination for the two.  Combination Smoke, CO and Natural Gas Detectors are also available.  Follow all manufacturers specifications as to placement of the unit within the structure.

If you think you may be exposed to CO, or a detector becomes activated;  Evacuate and Call 911.
